Waste water in baths, showers and wash basins could be recycled by altering the waste pipe to fill a tank/waterbutt instead of going down the drain. Using a charcoal based filter, impurities could be removed and the water then used for car washing, garden watering, pond/pool filling and many other things. If we did this in schools we could then pump the purified water to reuse over and over. My school has an orchard by saving money on water use we could set up an organic fruit and veg garden for the pupils to eat for part of their five a day and water it! we could earn money for the seeds compost etc by using our recycled water to clean parents and staff cars once a week and save energy from garage car washes etc.

I think this project is good becuase we should be able to start seeing if it is actully a good project. Also if you do waste water you can put it in a bucket and recycle your water to the peole who do not have much water like in Africa.

Also to save water, i read this in a mag: 'Put a brick or a large plastic bottle filled with water in your toilet cistern. Flushing the loo accounts for 30% of household water usage. This could save around 10 million litres a day- enough to supply 60,000 people!!!

Hi i think this is a really good idea

What if the water was used as you said for non-living things like filling toilet bowls and mixing concrete? Stuff like that gets dirty anyway so a little bit of dirt wont matter.

great idea and very original

My original idea to use the charcoal filter was to enable the water to have multi-uses ie human consumption but i wasn't sure how health & safety would view this - I kept it in on my blurb as i was unsure if any detergents, paint, soap or glue etc that may be washed down the plughole might affect the quality of the fruit and veg etc which I would prefer to be organic.

You don't need a 'charcoal based filter' to filter water to wash the car or water plants. As long as it's reasonably clean, you don't need to filter it!!
