About Carbon Control
The Carbon Control project, organised by the RSA in partnership with Tesco and the Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs, has been designed for key stages 2 and 3 work, pupils aged 7 – 14.
The RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce) works to remove the barriers to social progress. We drive ideas, innovation and change through an ambitious programme of projects, events and lectures. Our work is supported by 26,000 Fellows, an influential network of leaders from every field and background across the UK and overseas (see www.theRSA.org).
The RSA’s project looking at personal reponsibility for carbon emissions, CarbonLimited can be found at www.theRSA.org/carbon.
In ten years, Tesco has gone from being the UK's third supermarket to one of the three largest retailers in the world, employing 450,000 people. Across the UK, we have 1,900 stores, employ 250,000 people and turnover is over £30 billion. Sustainable growth and caring for the environment are integral to the way we do business, from Board level to checkout, and we have announced a series of ambitious projects and commitments. DEFRA, the government Department for Food and Rural Affairs, have funded the RSA as part of the Climate Challenge Fund. This fund was established to support initiatives across England that communicates climate change issues in order to establish positive attitude change. As part of this initiative DEFRA select a regional young representative to act as Climate Change Champions amongst their peers. These 9 Climate Change Champions have helped to design this project and the carbon calculator.
The carbon calculator has been designed as the junior version of an adult carbon calculator due to be launched by Defra later this month. They are the first carbon calculators with government approved data sets.
The carbonator was put together with assistance from
D:GEN and the Energy Saving Trust (who built the adult defra calculator)
and the food data was supplied by:
The Ice Organisation
